Corlea Trackway and Visitor Centre

Lough Ree

Athlone Castle and Museum

The castle origionally built in 1129AD by King Turlough O'Connor was constructed of wood, this was rebuilt in stone by King John of England in 1210AD.

The castle and museum offer a wonderful view of the local history with audio visual effects to help recreate the historic past of Athlone and the surrounding areas.

The Irish Peat Bogs

Found all over the area the peat bogs contain some of the best wildlife that Ireland has to offer with Curlew, Snipe, Woodcock and Skylark found beside the tranquil pools. Hen Harriers are also seen overhead. The otter and hares make their homes here along with foxes, hedgehogs and badgers. In mid-summer the bogs are alive with colour as the orchids, cranberries, pitcher plant and mosses show their natural beauty.

Lough Ree Yacht Club (established 1770)

Main claim to fame is the fact that this is the second oldest sailing club in the world. Originally named the Athlone yacht club the venue has many beautiful boats and barges to see.
